Politics Journal: How Not to Mix Religion and Politics

By Jyoti Malhotra

Until Saturday night, when one of India's best-known yoga gurus escaped from a Delhi police crackdown in female clothing — setting off peals of laughter across the country — the ruling Congress-led government looked in danger of being caught in the catatonic thrall of saffron-clad godmen and women.

Instead, we can now credit Baba Ramdev with helping the Congress party rediscover its political spine. His use of unparliamentary language against senior party leaders; his welcoming to the stage of Sadhvi Ritambhara, a Hindu nun whose venomous tirades against Muslims climaxed during the demolition of the Babri mosque in 1992; and his accusation of "treachery" against the government's interlocutors were more than the Congress party could bear, forcing it to reassert its authority, somewhat brutally, early Sunday morning.

Still, Congress should be asking itself how it managed to get into this mess – spinning 180 degrees in a matter of days between welcoming the swami at New Delhi airport to tracking him down despite his feminine disguise (with bushy beard reportedly covered with cloth.) The answer is that they should have seen it coming, since the party has been willfully mixing religion with politics since even before Independence.

In the aftermath of l'affaire Ramdev, Congress leaders have been seeking to transfer responsibility for last week's wooing onto the government. Two senior party leaders who spoke on the condition of anonymity told me the Cabinet Committee for Political Affairs had [...]

Career Journal: When Job Applicants Lie

More job applicants are lately fudging details on their resumes, and they are more likely to get caught.

Agence France-Presse/Getty Images
Even a small lie can be a major roadblock to a job applicant's career.

A study of pre-employment background checks conducted between January and March 2011 found that around 11% of candidates provided false data when applying for a job.

The percentage of discrepancies between what the candidate said and the truth has been rising every quarter, according to background screening firm First Advantage Pvt. which conducted the study and released it this week.

The study found some of the highest number of discrepancies in the education, travel, hospitality and real estate sectors. This could be because these industries have not historically been conducting background checks, said Wayne Tollemache, executive managing director at First Advantage in an email response. In comparison, financial services and information technology companies have been doing background checks for years and so don't get as many suspect resumes, said Mr. Tollemache.

While people at all experience levels are known to manipulate their resumes, the study found that the most manipulation was being done by individuals at the "associate level", which is typically a few years of experience.

These people tend to lie more particularly if they have changed a lot of jobs, said Abhay Rao, assistant vice president of human resources at AppLabs, a software company. "Freshers [...]

The condition of Baba Ramdev, who is on a fast unto death at his ashram at Haridwar, has deteriorated further.

Local doctors attending on him expressed concern over his health and said they have detected symptoms of dehydration as there was dearth of water in his body.

The doctors said there was an urgent need to break Ramdev's fast immediately failing which his condition would worsen further.

The doctors said they would advise 'force feeding' the yoga guru if he refused to end his fast.

With doctors pressing the panic button, the state government officials are trying to convince Baba Ramdev to end his fast.

The district magistrate and SP of Haridwar visited Baba Ramdev's ashram to convince him to break his fast.

China Catching Up With India on R&D Investment

By Anant Vijay Kala

Wang Zhao/Getty Images
China, which is one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the world and aspires to become a global manufacturing hub.

China is fast catching up with India as a destination for foreign investment in proprietary research and development, and could come to knock India from one of the few economic perches in which it is ahead of its northern neighbor, a study shows.

China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, receives almost four times as much foreign direct investment as India—about $105 billion in 2010. But for years India has been ahead of China on investments into R&D. In the fiscal year ended March 31, total R&D investment into India stood at $11.6 billion, which includes research for both proprietary and third-party use, compared to $9 billion for China, said Praveen Bhadada, a manager at the consulting firm Zinnov, which conducted the study.

But investment into China to fuel new products and innovations is growing at a much faster clip, at 16% a year compared to India's 11% growth a year.

And China looks set to soon overtake India when it comes to proprietary research and development, with foreign investment for these purposes currently at around $7.65 billion in the last fiscal year, putting the country is within sniffing distance of India's $7.75 billion worth of investment—largely because of the country's better infrastructure.

Mr. Bhadada said on Wednesday that China has be [...]

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described Mr. Husain’s death as a "national loss."

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil: “He was a world renowned artist whose extraordinary style made him a celebrity in his own right in the arena of contemporary paintings. His death would create a deep void in the world of art and creativity. He also brought glory to the house as a Parliamentarian.”

Vice President M Hamid Ansari: “Besides his enormous achievements in painting and other art forms, M.F. Husain was a keen observer of our national evolution which was reflected in his art. He will always be remembered for his love of India that was reflected in his paintings”

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar: “His death leaves behind a vacuum.”

Better Times Ahead for India’s Stock Investors

This year has been a bad one for the Indian stock market, which performed among the world's worst.  Inflation continues to rage, there are signs of slowing economic growth and bribery allegations against companies are surfacing with alarming regularity, taking their toll on the companies' shares.

Noah Seelam/Agence France-Presse/Getty Images
Food inflation in the week to May 28 accelerated to 9.01% from 8.55% in the previous week.

But some analysts are starting to say the gloom-and-doom scenario is overstated and that there's actually money to be made in India’s stock market.

At an investment seminar in Mumbai last week, Morgan Stanley's head of India equity research Ridham Desai told CNBC TV-18 that Indian shares fitted his "3U" criteria. They are under-owned, under-loved and have under-performed — a great combination to make money.

At its own investment seminar in Mumbai on Wednesday, Citigroup cited beaten-down economic growth expectations, elevated risk perceptions and the resultant moderation in stock valuations as reasons to buy Indian stocks.

India’s 30-share benchmark Sensex has fallen 10.4% in 2011 so far, not nearly in the same league as the strife-torn Egypt’s 24% tumble, but the worst among major financial markets. Even tsunami-hit Japan has done better, with the Nikkei index having shed 7.4% this year.

Recently, trading volume for the Sensex has tumbled as cagey investors are choosing to sit out of the market, according to ma [...]
