It’s Bhardwaj Versus Yeddyurappa in Karnataka

The southern state of Karnataka seems to be heading for political turmoil as the face-off between the governor and chief minister has escalated with a new attack and counterattack.

The war between the two intensified after Governor H.R. Bhardwaj submitted a report to the federal government Sunday recommending the dismissal of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led state government and the imposition of President’s Rule, which would give control of the state to New Delhi.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa dismissed this as an “undemocratic move” and said his government was stable. Any attempts to dismiss the government "would amount to subverting the democratic process and should not be encouraged,” he told television news channels Monday.

Prakash Javadekar, a BJP spokesman, added in an interview that “all efforts to destabilize the government will fall flat as the BJP will exhibit majority in the state.”

This round of mud-slinging is just the latest in a long-running spat that has seen Congress target Mr. Yeddyurappa, who faces allegations of graft. He has become a flashpoint in part because Congress itself has been facing its own widespread allegations of corruption from the BJP, so focusing on him has allowed the government to say that it is taking action – the sacking of telecom minister A.
