India Markets Weekahead: Outlook cautious, look overseas for cues

India Markets Weekahead: Outlook cautious, look overseas for cues

(The views expressed in this column are the author's own and do not represent those of Reuters)
The markets were in no man's land despite the high volatility in an important monetary policy announcement week. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) policy action was in line with market expectation of a 25 bps rate hike, though a section of market participants felt there could be pause. The RBI maintained that it will continue its anti-inflationary stance till the time there are signs of downward movement in the inflation trajectory. Going by the hawkish stance, we believe that we might see a rate hike in October before we come to a pause. Inflation should start heading southwards from Q3FY12 mainly due to base effect. Another key event during the week was the depreciation of the rupee which dipped to a two-year low close to 48 rupees against the dollar as India relaxed its overseas borrowings rules and allowed companies to refinance rupee debt through overseas borrowing. The rupee will continue to be weak, however further losses from current levels doesn't seem likely unless credit conditions deteriorate severely, which is not expected. The Indian government once again deferred the mega USD 2.5 billion FPO of ONGC, which was supposed to open on September 20. The government expectation on the issue price was not in sync with the market. The mention of an FPO is a value destruction proposition in the short-term for the issuer company unless SEBI overhauls the issue guidelines. With limited cues locally, the market participants are expected to look overseas for direction. The markets on Monday are initially expected to react to the outcome of the [...]

Honda Motor plans to set up its first assembly plant in Russia, the Nikkei business daily reported on Sunday, as Japan's No.3 automaker looks to lift its competitiveness in the fast-growing auto market. The company is looking to invest several billion yen (tens of millions of dollars) to produce 30,000 to 50,000 cars annually, the Nikkei said, adding Honda has submitted the plans to the Russian government and had started talks with officials. Honda is consulting officials on the location of the assembly plant, which will use components imported from its global facilities, and the Russian Far East is seen as one candidate, the Nikkei said. A Honda spokesman declined to comment on the report. General Motors, Renault, and a host of other top players have already announced plans to ramp up production in Russia in exchange for lower import tariffs for parts. Honda, which sold about 18,000 cars in Russia last year, has been selling its cars with tariffs of about 50 percent, making them more expensive than automobiles produced by rivals locally. Russia's vehicles market is expected to double sales to about 4 million units a year by mid-decade. ($1 = 76.875 Japanese yen) (Reporting by James Topham)

Libyan forces battle to loosen grip on Gaddafi towns

(Reuters) - Libyan interim government forces charged a desert stronghold controlled by fighters loyal to Muammar Gaddafi and battled on the streets of the ousted leader's hometown as they struggled to quash his last pockets of support. Nearly a month since they drove Gaddafi's forces out of the capital Tripoli, transitional government fighters have become mired in sieges of his loyalists' remaining redoubts, raising doubt over whether they can quickly unite the vast country. Forces backed by Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) made little headway against stiff resistance in Gaddafi's birthplace Sirte on Saturday, but were able to celebrate the capture of the town of Herawa 60 km (40 miles) to the east. The fighters also stormed back into the desert town of Bani Walid, a day after diehard loyalists beat them into a retreat. An NTC spokesman said anti-Gaddafi forces also captured the small town of Birak as they advanced on the major loyalist stronghold of Sabha, deep in the remote southern desert. Gaddafi's spokesman said the ousted leader was still in Libya and leading resistance. Moussa Ibrahim also accused NATO of killing 354 people in a bombing of Sirte, an accusation Reuters could not independently verify. NATO said such reports in the past had been false. A column of NTC pickup trucks mounted with anti-aircraft machine guns and fresh ammunition rushed into Bani Walid as dusk fell across Libya's interior desert. "Gaddafi forces attacked the checkpoint so our troops went in. There is a lot of fighting inside the city right now," senior regional NTC official Abdullah Kenshil said. Ibrahim, the deposed leader's spokesman, contacted Reuters by satellite telephone to say Gaddafi was still in Libya, leading the "resistance" against his foes. "We will be able to continue this fight and we have enough arms for months and months to come," he said. He said NATO air strikes on Sirte had hit a residential building and a hotel, killin [...]

Three Cheers!

At last after an year of buying my sewing machine, I bought the table and chair for it. I have not fully acquainted myself with this new machine.

I learnt sewing on my Mom's 45 year old Usha hand machine. My Mom is very good with it. She used to sew all her sari blouses and still does. All our clothes right from our child hood  to our teens were stitched by her.

Previous to that, she used to sew by hand and my late aunt, used to always praise my Mom's sewing. She used to say that my Mom's stitching was so perfect that it looked as if stitched by a sewing machine. My Mom also embroiders very beautifully.

My passion in Needle Work is genetical :) :) and  I got it from my Maternal Grand Mother and My Mom. All my maternal aunts are very proficient in sewing, embroidery and other crafts.
