Professor Sues Pittsburgh for Zapping Her With Weapon Developed to Fight Terrorists

Courthouse News Service

PITTSBURGH (CN) - An English professor says she suffered "permanent hearing loss, nausea, pain and disorientation" when Pittsburgh police used a Long Range Acoustic Device, developed to fight terrorists, on a peaceful demonstration against the IMF, in which she was not participating, but merely watching.

Karen Piper sued Pittsburgh and its police force for negligence, civil rights and constitutional claims, in Federal Court.

"During the G-20 Summit Meeting held in Pittsburgh in September 2009, City of Pittsburgh Police used a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) against civilians on or about the streets of Pittsburgh," the complaint states. "The LRAD, a distance hailing and crowd control device, was developed in response to the terrorist attack on the USS Cole in October 2000, and was originally intended to be used by American warships to warn incoming vessels approaching without permission. Among other things, it emits harmful, pain-inducing sounds over long distances. The LRAD is a military-style weapon, and it was used for the first time in the United States when the Pittsburgh Police directed it on civilians in September 2009. Plaintiff Karen L. Piper, a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, was an innocent bystander on September 24, 2009, who suffered permanent hearing loss, nausea, pain and disorientation wh [...]

The "parent trigger" law lets 51% of parents petition to change a failing school and replace all the teachers or close it or turn it into a charter school.

A strange experiment going on in a California, Texas, Ohio, and Connecticut (and under consideration in many more states):
In essence, the law creates a parents' union, which advocates say will provide powerful and needed counterweight to teachers' unions and district bureaucracies....

[W]ith opponents and skeptics arguing that parents lack the expertise to make important policy decisions better left to career educators, the Compton case is a prime example of how challenging it can be to create change.

"We've been waiting for this for a very long time," said Gregoria Gonzalez... "We are very tired of being told if we want to help we simply should stand outside watching recess or making something for a bake sale."

US uses drones to target al-Qaeda in the Horn of Africa

BBC
Frank Gardner

Quietly, with as little fanfare as possible, the US is trying to confront the twin challenges of terrorism and piracy in and around the Horn of Africa.

Amongst other means, the Americans are increasing using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), known as drones.

It is a controversial policy - the CIA is most worried by Somalia and Yemen, so it is no coincidence they are coming under the most surveillance from the air.

Those nations are also experiencing a rising number of unpopular missile strikes by armed MQ-9 Reaper drones, successor to the earlier Predators.

Crippling al-Qaeda

Counter-terrorism officials say that in failed or failing states, the drones are a precision-guided weapon to target al-Qaeda operatives, where the host country will not allow the US to put forces on the ground.
They point to Pakistan's Tribal Territories, which border Afghanistan, where President Barack Obama's administration has ordered a massive increase in drone strikes.

These have resulted in the crippling of much of al-Qaeda's fugitive leadership, but also in large numbers of civilian casualties.

Schalke caretaker faces Freiburg test

All eyes will be on Seppo Eichkorn on Saturday as takes charge of Schalke in their German Bundesliga match against Freiburg.
Eichkorn is one of two interim coaches taking to the bench this weekend, after Schalke were rocked by the resignation on health grounds of coach Ralf Rangnick.
And the Schalke caretaker will be hoping to enjoy the same positive start as Rodolfo Cardoso had on Friday night, when he led Hamburg to a 2-1 win over Stuttgart.
Cardoso is currently temporarily in charge of Hamburg after their poor start to the season - they claimed just one point from six matches before Friday night - saw them sack Michael Oenning on Monday.

Tiger Pataudi’s parting shot for the media

A day after the passing of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, The Telegraph has reprinted a 1995 interview with the former cricket captain, who also did a stint as editor of Sporstsworld, the now-defunct magazine from the Ananda Bazaar Patrika group that owns The Telegraph.

The interviewer is Salma Khurshid, the current Union law minister, whose wife Louise Fernandes used to be a correspondent for Sunday magazine, also of the ABP group.

Salman: Tell me about other things in life… something about the media world.

Tiger: Really, they deserve the biggest kick up their arse. They do the most damage.

Salman: And they are absolutely irresponsible. Don't you see something in this, apart from the fact that there is a big problem of accountability in the media and every time we've tried, or anyone has tried, to make a system by which the media can be made accountable, they've cried, they've cried themselves hoarse, and we haven't succeeded. People can defame anyone they like, people can write anything they like. But non-accountability is a part of modern Indian culture.

Tiger: But they're also well patronised. They wouldn't be doing this unless they were patronised by the politicians.

Salman: Yes that is true. But the media is going to change. There is a new kind of media. I often tell the small-time newspaper people that you keep publishing your 5,000 copies defaming people, but there's an electronic media coming that sees facts a little more clearly because it shows them on the screen. You object as much as you like, but the day of the electronic media has come.

Navigating a proposal with Google Maps for mobile

I recently decided to propose to my girlfriend, Faigy. I knew I wanted to do something meaningful and —yes—a little over the top, so I decided to put my software engineering skills to work to create the ultimate romantic scavenger hunt. On the road to "The Big Question," I wanted Faigy to visit places around New York City that were filled with memories of our relationship. My plan was to construct a map of the route and get my girlfriend from one destination to the next, all with the element of surprise. Google Maps gave me the tools I needed to make the magic happen.

I used My Maps to plan out the route—from the Trader Joe's we shop at on the Upper West Side, to Magnolia Bakery where we spent part of our first date, to Hudson Bar [...]

Turkey Contests A Cypriot-Israeli Accord For Oil And Gas Exploration By Sending In Their Own Ships

Turkish Vessels Embark On Gas Mission In Challenge To Cyprus -- Deutsche Welle

Turkey has sent ships into the Mediterranean on a gas exploration mission in direct response to Cypriot offshore drilling in the region. Turkey says Cyprus should have waited for a settlement on reunification first.

Turkey sent a vessel into the eastern Mediterranean in search of gas stores on Friday, days after it warned Cyprus not to go ahead with its own gas exploration activities in Israeli waters.

Turkey contests a Cypriot-Israeli accord signed last year to create an exclusive economic zone in the waters between them.

A Woman Scorned

Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary, is to be investigated by police over allegations that he allowed his wife Vicky Pryce to take speeding points on his behalf.

Essex police have assigned an officer to investigate the claims that would almost certainly result in the end of Mr Huhne's ministerial career and a jail sentence if proven.

The suggestion that the former Liberal Democrat leadership contender persuaded someone else to accept his speeding points, so he could avoid a driving ban, was first raised publicly by his estranged wife Vicky Pryce last week.

The Daily Telegraph has learnt that the person alleged to have taken the points is Miss Pryce herself.

Happy birthday, Freddie Mercury

From time to time we invite guests to post about items of interest and are thrilled to have Brian May join us to talk about friend and bandmate Freddie Mercury. Our doodle celebrating Freddie's birthday can be seen around the world on September 5 and, out of respect for Labor Day, in the U.S. on September 6. A guitarist and songwriter, Brian May is a founding member of Queen and wrote many of the band's hits, including "We Will Rock You," "The Show Must Go On" and "I Want It All." Brian is also a respected solo artist and one of the founders of Freddie for a Day (www.freddieforaday.com), an organization helping to fight HIV/AIDS globally. - Ed.

I was first introduced to Freddie Mercury—a paradoxically shy yet flamboyant young man—at the side of the stage at one of our early gigs as the group "SMILE." He told me he was excited by how we played, he had some ideas—and he could sing! I'm not sure we took him very seriously, but he did have the air of someone who knew he was right. He was a frail but energised dandy, with seemingly impossible dreams and a wicked twinkle in his eye. A while later we had the opportunity to actually see him sing ... and it was scary! He was wild and untutored, but massively charismatic. Soon, he began his evolution into a world-class vocal talent, right in front of our eyes.

Freddie was fully focused, never allowing anything or anyone to get in the way of his vision for the future. He was truly a free spirit. There are not many of these in the world. To achieve this, you have to be, like Freddie, fearless—unafraid of upsetting anyone's apple cart.

Some people imagine Freddie as the fiery, difficult diva who required everyone around him to compromise. No. In our world, as four artists attempting to paint on the same canvas, Freddie was always the one who could find the compromise—the way to pull [...]

Satellite hits Earth, location unknown

A decommissioned Nasa satellite, the biggest piece of US space junk to fall in 30 years, has crash-landed but the precise location is not yet known, the US space agency said early Saturday.

Nasa has repeatedly said there is only a "very remote" risk to the public from the 26
fragments of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) which were expected to survive the fiery re-entry into the atmosphere.

The satellite fell back to Earth between 11:23pm Friday and 1:09am Saturday (0323-0509 GMT Saturday), but the precise re-entry time and location "are not yet known with certainty," NASA said.

"The satellite was passing eastward over Canada and Africa as well as vast portions of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans during that period," it said in its latest update.

On its Twitter feed, Nasa said, "If debris fell on land (and that's still a BIG if), Canada is most likely area."

The two dozen parts of the UARS that may have survived re-entry could weigh anything from two to 350 pounds (1-158 kilograms), the space agency said, and the debris field is expected to span 500 miles (800 kilometers).

Harry Truman recognized Israel as a state, but NOT a "Jewish" state.

 WhatReallyHappened.com

After David Ben Gurion rejected the United Nations partition plan and simply declared Israel to be in existence, Harry Truman, goaded by Chaim Weizmann, recognized the new state. However, as Truman's own letter shows, he did not recognize Israel as a "Jewish" state, because to do so would violate the First Amendment prohibition on respecting one institution of religion over any other. So, to clarify an oft quoted claim, the United States officially recognizes the state of Israel, but does not recognize it as a Jewish state. This means the Palestinians or indeed any non-Jewish residents of Israel are recognized as having equal status under United States law.

Jose Enrique to sign for Liverpool

Liverpool are set to renew their interest in Newcastle left back Jose Enrique especially after it emerged that they were no longer the favorites to land Gael Clichy from Arsenal, after the Frenchman opted for Manchester City. Over the last 6 months, Enrique has been on the Liverpool management's sights, and they will now focus their efforts on landing him. The player has only one year on his contract, and could opt to see out the term, and leave on a free on the next transfer. He has also refused to sign a new deal that would keep him at the club, and manager Alan Pardew has been forced to come to terms with the fact that there is no way he is remaining at the club. With the kind of talent and the interest already being shown in the player, he is thought to be valued by his team at £10 million, of which the suitors will have to come  up with in the event that they are to prize him away

"Tackle on Ronaldo was an accident"

Dinamo Zagreb's Jerko Leko has revealed that his tackle on Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo was an accident.
The Portuguese winger was angered by Leko's tackle on him during Real Madrid's 1-0 victory over Dinamo in their UEFA Champions League clash.
However, the Croatian has denied purposely trying to hurt the 26-year-old.
"I immediately put my leg in, but I could see nothing. I went straight for the ball and I did not mean to hurt Ronaldo," said Leko to Jutarnji List.
"Ronaldo believes it was a pre-conceited tackle, but I think he is an extraordinary player, if a little arrogant. As for the tackle, it was unfortunate."

Gmail: It’s cooler in the cloud

(Cross-posted on Gmail, Green and Enterprise blogs)

Cloud computing is secure, simple, keeps you productive and saves you money. But the cloud can also save energy. A recent report by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Verdantix estimates that cloud computing has the potential to reduce global carbon emissions by millions of metric tons. And Jonathan Koomey, a consulting professor at Stanford who has led several studies on data center energy use, has written that for many enterprises, the cloud "is significantly more energy efficient than using in-house data centers."

Because we're committed to sustainability, we sharpened our pencils and looked at our own services to see how they stack up against the alternatives.

We compared Gmail to the traditional enterprise email solutions it's replaced for more than 4 million businesses. The results were clear: switching to Gmail can be almost 80 times more energy efficient (PDF) than running in-house email. This is because cloud-based services are typically housed in highly efficient data centers that operate [...]

Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli 23rd September 2011 Written Episode

When I opened my eyes I was lying in some rusty old place. Lata's story: She sees a crack in the door and is trying to escape. Three or four gundas are gambling and drinking. Lata is trying to escape when a part of her saree gets stuck. While she is still trying to untangle her saree one of the gundas shout the lady escaped. Another gunda says if she ran away then go get her. As soon as she gets her saree untangled a gunda comes and says you were trying to escape? He is pulling her hair. He says you want to escape? Will you escape? Lata says please let me go. The gundas start messing around with her. Back to present. Lata is telling this whole story to everyone in the room. Back to the past: the gundas says he will save you. Look look. Lata sees Vimal. She says Vimal very faintly. Back to the present. Everyone is shocked. The police is writing everything down. Lata says I had asked for his help. Past: Lata says Vimal ji please save me. Please. Back to present: Lata says but Vimal ji stayed quiet and did not move. Shelly is not feeling well. Lata says those gundas wanted to rip me apart maa. The past is shown and the gundas are trying to make Lata drink alcohol and stuff. Lata is pleading for help from Vimal ji. Back to present: Karan says there is some misunderstanding somewhere. Didi please think again carefully. Lata says no Karan. This is the truth. I have seen it with my own eyes. Abha says Vimal bhaiya? Why would Vimal bhaiya do such a thing? Lata says Abha I don't know what relation, if any, Vimal ji had with those gundas. Lata says suddenly there was a police siren there. As soon as they heard it the gundas and Vimal ji ran away. And I also took the opportunity to run off. Maybe they wanted to scare me…Mami says only scare you? Meaning…The doctor walks in. The doctor says her reports have come. Abha asks what do the reports say Dr? The Dr says the reports have come, but you all please be strong. It has been confirmed [...]

Google just got ZAGAT Rated!

"Did you know there's a place in Menlo Park near the Safeway that has a 27 food rating?" one of my friends asked me that about two years ago, and I was struck because I immediately knew what it meant. Food rating... 30 point scale... Zagat. And the place... had to be good. With no other context, I instantly recognized and trusted Zagat's review and recommendation.

So, today, I'm thrilled that Google has acquired Zagat. Moving forward, Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering—delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights, while enabling people everywhere to find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences around the corner and around the world.

With Zagat, we gain a world-class team that has more experience in consumer based-surveys, recommendations and reviews than anyone else in the industry. Founded by Tim and Nina Zagat more than 32 years ago, Zagat has established a trusted and well-loved brand the world over, operating in 13 categories and more than 100 cities. The Zagats have demonstrated their ability to innovate and to do so with tremendous insight. Their surveys may be one of the earliest forms of UGC (user-generated content)—gathering restaurant recommendations from friends, computing and distributing ratings before the Internet as we know it today even existed. Their iconic pocket-sized guides with paragraphs summarizing and "snippeting" sentiment were "mobile" before "mobile" involved electronics. Today, Zagat provides people with a democratized, authentic and comprehensive view of where to eat, drink, stay, shop and play worldwide based on millions of reviews and ratings.

For all of these reasons, I'm incredibly excited to collaborate with Zagat to bring the power of Google search and Google Maps to their products and users, and to bring their innovation, trusted reputation and wealth of experience to our users.

Lukaku: I want Champs League spot

Romelu Lukaku has vowed to do everything possible to force his way into Chelsea's Champions League squad in January after finding himself omitted for the group stages.
Summer signing Lukaku was sacrificed when Andre Villas-Boas selected his pool of players for the Blues' Group E campaign due to UEFA's restrictions on imported stars.
But after running himself into the ground in last night's Carling Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Fulham - his full debut for his boyhood idols - the 18-year-old was determined to change Villas-Boas' mind.

A town shuts down to protest media corruption!

Unbelievable as it may sound, residents of the town of Mudhol in North Karnataka observed a bandh (shutdown) on Tuesday, September 20, to protest “blackmail journalism” and the growing number of imposters masquerading as journalists to extort money.

According to a report in the Kannada daily Praja Vani, the bandh in the town of 100,000 residents was a “complete success”.

Shops and business establishments downed their shutters for a few hours, and vehicles were off the roads.

The protestors included politicians, farmers, even journalists, and a host of other organisations. They marched to the tahsildar‘s office and presented a memorandum.

One protestor slammed weekly newspapers for bringing a bad name to the entire profession, and another targetted the misuse of the right to information (RTI) Act to ferret out information that was later used for extortion.

Mudhol town is famous for its country-bred hounds used for hunting.

How our cloud does more with less

We've worked hard to reduce the amount of energy our services use. In fact, to provide you with Google products for a month—not just search, but Google+, Gmail, YouTube and everything else we have to offer—our servers use less energy per user than a light left on for three hours. And, because we've been a carbon-neutral company since 2007, even that small amount of energy is offset completely, so the carbon footprint of your life on Google is zero.

We've learned a lot in the process of reducing our environmental impact, so we've added a new section called "The Big Picture" to our Google Green site with numbers on our annual energy use and carbon footprint.

We started the process of getting to zero by making sure our operations use as little energy as possible. For the last decade, energy use has been an obsession. We've designed and built some of the most efficient servers and data centers in the world—using half the electricity of a typical data center. Our newest facility in Hamina, Finland, opening this weekend, uses a unique seawater cooling system that requires very little electricity.

Whenever possible, we use renewable energy. We have a large solar panel installation at our Mountain View campus, and we've purchased the output of two wind farms to power our data cent [...]

'Precious Knowledge' Revolutionary Education in Tucson

FEATURE FILM: Watch trailer: Disenfranchised high school seniors become academic warriors and community leaders in Tucson, Arizona's embattled Ethnic Studies classes while state lawmakers attempt to eliminate the program.Director: Ari Palos Stars: Curtis Acosta and Jose Gonzalez Genre Feature Documentary Studio Dos Vatos Productions

TUCSON -- Precious Knowledge interweaves the transformative stories of seniors in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. Inequalities in education continue to affect people of color. The ticking time bomb story of our time is that fewer than six in 10 Latino adults in the United States have a high school diploma. These alarming dropout rates will continue to have a serious impact on our nation. Our documentary goes further, however, by illustrating forms of critical pedagogy that can empower Latino youth and other youth of color and change this state of affairs. Precious Knowledge will illustrate to a nationwide audience a Mexican American Studies program that inspires 82% of its students to enroll in college. The themes of Precious Knowledge are embedded in the journey of each student as they: self reflect, seek out precious knowledge, begin to act, and ultimately transform, while nurturing positive images of Latino identity and embracing the dignity of all cultures and histories.
